Guys, the world is not coming to an end because of Coronavirus. Before COVID-19 there were more deadly diseases that ravaged the world.
The mortality rate of Covid-19 is only 5% at the moment. When compared to common African epidemics like malaria which according to the UNICEF kills 3,000 children daily in Sub-Saharan Africa and causes around 1-3million deaths per year, then Covid-19 is ‘a joke’.

1. Coronavirus vs. Spanish flu – 1918
The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 was one of the deadliest disease events in human history, infecting about one-third of the world’s population.
In the first year of the pandemic and within 24 weeks the disease killed more people than HIV/AIDS did in 24 years.
This particular virus infected over 500 million people worldwide, and killed between 60 to 100 million people.
Global cases: 500 million
Global deaths: 60- 100 million
Key symptoms: fever, nausea, aches, diarrhea
Transmission: spread through respiratory droplets
Most affected groups: otherwise healthy adults ages 20 to 40
2. Coronavirus vs. Black Plague – 1327
Estimates say that the black plague reduced the world population by 25% while Europe was even harder hit and lost 30-60% of its population.
It took over 200 years for the European population to recover from the black plague.
3. 2002–2004 severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)
SARS is another type of coronavirus that came out of China and spread quickly through respiratory droplets. Though the SARS death rate was higher than COVID-19, COVID-19 has already claimed more lives.
Global cases: 8,098 cases across 29 countries.
Global deaths: 774; That is 15 percent mortality rate.
Key symptoms: fever, respiratory symptoms, cough, malaise
First detection: November 2002 in Guangdong province of China
Transmission: spread through respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces
Most affected groups: patients 60 and older had a 55 percent higher death rate.
4. 2009 (H1N1) flu pandemic
Global cases: about 24 percent of global population;
Global deaths: over 284,000; death rate was .02 percent
Key symptoms: fever, chills, cough, body aches
First detection: January 2009 in Mexico.
Most affected groups: children had the highest rates;
5. 2014–2016 Ebola. Ebola was extremely deadly, killing up to 50 percent of those who got sick.
Global cases: 28,652 cases across 10 countries
Global deaths: 11,325 deaths; death rate was about 50 percent
Key symptoms: fever, aches and pains, weakness, diarrhoea, vomiting.
First detection: the first patient identified December 2013 in Guinea; first outbreak March 2014.
Transmission: spread through bodily fluids (blood, sweat, faeces)
What about HIV/AIDS: More than 50 million people around the world are HIV positive. And the virus has killed millions so far and is still killing.
FINALLY, Coronavirus is still an active outbreak, and it’s important to take steps to reduce both your chance of contracting it and the spread of disease if you do fall ill.
The WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION advice is to:
Wash your hands frequently with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
Maintain social distancing (at least 1 metre/3 feet between yourself and anybody who is coughing or sneezing).
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, ideally with your bent elbow or a tissue.
Seek medical care early if you have a fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.
Take protection measures if you are in or have recently visited areas where coronavirus is spreading.
